June Gets Emotional

Portico is proud to present June Gets Emotional, a solo exhibition featuring the work of June Linowitz.  This exhibition is comprised of art from three bodies of work, the HEADS, PORTRAITS, and NOSTALGIA series. Artist Reception April 15, 2023, from 6-8 PM (free and open to the public)

The HEADS in this exhibition are both universal and highly individual.  Their features are based on universal facial expressions. We are fortunate to have the entire series of 24 HEADS in the exhibition.

“Emotions are our basic responses to how we interact with the world. These HEADS are personal statements drawn from my life experience.” June Linowitz.

The PORTRAITS in this exhibition are intimate and emotional.  They are visual memories and include family members and close friends. June’s relationship with these people has been rich and full of complexity and love.

NOSTALGIA is a group of works based primarily on old photographs from June’s childhood. A personal exploration of her history grew to be a visual memoir.  The scenes in this exhibition are based on old family black and white photographs: moments from June’s childhood, family vacations, and family gatherings.  They present a world that has vanished and in many cases people who are no longer here. This body of work is suffused with nostalgia, wistful affection, and longing for that which has gone. All this work is mixed media: artist-made abaca paper with pulp painting, beeswax, photo transfer of an original drawing, crochet thread, yarn, pastel, and framed with dyed shaped canvas.
